DANCEiSM 2.27.10

2 03 2010

This wasn’t just any DANCEiSM, this was the party celebrating 2 years of DANCEiSM absurdity.

Let’s start from the beginning, shall we? The bus ride to the venue (under one of LA’s iconic and sketchier bridges) was less than entertaining, mostly due to overzealous freshmen who had had too much to drink resulting in a vomit incident; at least it occurred at the end of the ride. In the end it boiled down to everyone being stoked for a good night.

I have to say, one of my favorite parts of DANCEiSM is the body paint. Give me a palette of semi-questionable paint and a canvas of flesh and it is automatically going to be a good night, even if it will most likely be wiped away by the first sweaty torso to rub against you. Some people go for designs and symbols while others opt for brazen statements, such as our friend here:

The tunes: In all honesty I was in no condition to remember DJs from that night; my roommate and I had pre-partied pretty extensively. The lineup was as follows:

9.00—Sean Kim

10:00—Doc P

11.15—Mr. White

12.15—Ben Oprstu

1.15—Robot Love

2.15—BONES

3.00—ASAA & SP

I remember not being a huge fan of Ben Oprstu, even if he is the founder of DANCEiSM. The energy was nowhere near as high as it should have been at that point, and the transitions were awkwardly abrupt. When I’m feeling the bass in my chest I don’t want to have to stop for anything. The other DJs delivered and the dancing didn’t stop except for the occasional smoke break.

While the venue itself was ideal, boasting two warehouses and a patio wafting cool air onto a sweaty dance floor, the location and lack of communication with the busses caused a lot of kids to stand around waiting in the cold for far too long. At one point, one of the busses arrived and a group of LMU students literally mobbed the doors–my feet were actually off the ground. Needless to say we didn’t make it on the first bus.

Besides the bus drama I had a blast at DANCEiSM, this being only my second. It’s a pretty good deal when you’re guaranteed a ride to and from school, good music and (of course) body paint.

Next DANCEiSM in April, RSVP!
